We are living in a highly polluted world. In some places it’s the high air pollution which is posing a serious health concern (mostly in developing countries) while in other countries it’s the toxin laden food (developed and developing countries alike) or chemicals entering in our body though personal care product (highly misleading name), packaged food and drinks which is central issue.
The design of the modern world is such that we enjoy this toxicity unless alarmed by some serious health issue. Mostly wake up call comes when we or our loved ones fell ill, sometimes seriously ill. If this is not the case with you and you have started taking care of yourself consciously as a lifestyle choice you are lucky and on the beautiful path to health and spirituality.
When we start focusing on reducing harmful chemicals entering in our body we can initially become overwhelmed. This is the point when the reality strike us. The reality is its way difficult to change the life for the better and move towards a more healthy holistic life than we would have imagined. We are literally drowning in toxins. Now we start realizing that not even a single aspect of our being is untouched with the man made toxins and chemicals.
But the good news is – still there is a way. It’s an amazing journey when you realize that small daily conscious decisions can take you far in the direction towards health and peace.
So here are three most important decisions you can make and immediate act to reduce the toxin intake more than half in a day
1. Wear good quality mask whenever you are on the road
If you are living in highly polluted city in China, India or any other part of the world, wearing a good mask which protects you from particulate matter (PM) 2.5, PM 10, dust, vehicular pollution, and factory pollution can take you far in the direction of good health.
2. Treat your vegetables at home to remove maximum residual pesticides before eating
Pesticide residues, once in our system can be the cause for several acute and chronic diseases. Eating food grown without harmful chemicals is the first step forwards a healthy and sustainable life.
Try to eat as much organically grown vegetables and fruits as possible. But the grip of chemical industry is such that it’s difficult to find organic vegetables in the market. Even if they are available they are 3-5 times costlier than the chemically grown vegetables. Many a times your financial condition does not allow you to buy organic vegetables and fruits daily.
In such a case its best to do whatever is best possible doing at home to remove maximum pesticides from them. One of the most easy and much effective treatments is washing fruits and vegetables with 2% salt water. This will remove most of the contact pesticide residues normally found on the surfaces of vegetables and fruits.
According to the study about 75-80% of pesticide reduces present on the surface of fruits like grapes, apples, guava, plums, mangoes, peaches and pears and fruity vegetables like tomatoes, brinjal and okra can be removed by cold water washing. Its best to wash them two to three times.
The pesticide residues from green leafy vegetables can also be removed satisfactorily by normal washing followed by blanching i.e. putting them on hot water for a very short period of time.
All this may appear very time consuming, but it’s a trade off between health and illness and clearly health should win.
It will also save you a lot of money in future and can make you happy and satisfied today and tomorrow.
If you can count the benefit of this for you and your loved ones over their lifetime, this will just appear a very important lifestyle decision of immense value.
3. Selecting natural easily available skin care products present in your home can drastically reduce the toxin intake
There are hundreds and thousands of chemicals they put in the skin care products. Start reading the labels and you will know. So without thinking twice ditch your skin care products one at a time. I would suggest start with your cream and moisturizer.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and needed to be treated with sensitivity and respect. I have personally learned to apply in my skin only things I won’t hesitate to eat. My favorite is homemade clarified butter (Ghee) and extra virgin coconut oil. You can add to the list the oil you are eating in your part of the world. The point is it’s our own skin and we must stop chemically abuse it.
Today is a good day. What is desired is to be a little more mindful whenever step out – to put on our mask, add a few more minutes to our cooking time – soak & wash the fruits & vegetables in salt water and remember to apply our most favorite edible oil/ ghee to our face.
Congratulations to you to be able to reduce the toxin intake. Now do it every day.
The time is to wear your smile.
