    Sun Temple of Katarmal

Sun Temple of Katarmal According to the Information board put up in the premises of Sun Temple of Katarmal situated in a village called Katarmal in Almora by Archaeological Survey of India: ‘The Sun Temple popularly Known as ‘Baraditya facing east, is one of the biggest and tallest temples, of the Kumaun region was probably built by Katarmal, the medieval king of Katury dynasty who ruled the central Himalayan Region. There are as many as 45 miniature shrines in different groups clustering around the main shrine seems to be constructed at different periods. The main temple is Triratha on plan having curvilinear shikhara of nagara style with sqaure garbhagraha (sanctum sanctorium)…

What is Yarsagumba? Its Uses, Importance, Per kg Price and Benefits

What is Yarsagumba? Yarsagumba is a unique fungus which grows on caterpillar. It is found in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas.  It is a parasitic relation of a fungus which grows on the larvae stage of many species of moth caterpillar.  Yarsagumba takes the nutrients for its own growth from caterpillar. The caterpillar becomes devoid of  its nutrients and in the process the caterpillar dies.  This is the reason that Yarsagumba is also called half caterpillar half fungus. In scientific terms it is known as Ophiocordyceps sinensis.  Its unique life-cycle brought it names Yarchagumba, Yatsa gunbu, Yartsa gunba, Yatsagumbu and keeda jadi. In Tibet ‘Yatsa gunbu’  means ‘Summer grass winter worm‘.  …

Do You Know What Is Greenhouse Effect ?

What is Greenhouse effect? Greenhouses are those glass buildings put up to nourish plants and get fruits even in the cold unfavorable seasons. These glass walled structures let the sunlight come inside but do not let the heat from inside go out. They trap heat and this makes the interior of the green houses warmer than the outside. This artificial warmer environment makes plants to go normally and bear fruits. The Greenhouse phenomenon experienced by a planet such as earth is different from the above mentioned greenhouses. But there is a commonality. This is that the greenhouse effect keeps the earth warmer than the temperature the planet should be having if…

List of Effects of Climate Change on Sea Level Rise, Agriculture & Food Security, Water and Human Health

List of Effects of Climate Change on Environment As per the scientific projections the average temperature of earth could rise by 3 to 10 oC by the end of the century if the present CO2 emissions level continues. This is an estimate about the average rise in the global temperature.  In reality, due to the climate change the temperature of some areas will rise much more than the other parts of the world. Some areas may even become cooler. Extreme weather events such as violent storms, intense heat waves, flooding and drought are predicted to occur more due to changing climate. The climate change will affect the natural ecosystems such…

Total CO2 Emissions and Sectors Responsible

CO2 Emissions : CO2 is naturally present in the atmosphere. It takes important part in creating greenhouse effect. Greenhouse effect is responsible for maintaining the inhabitable temperature on earth. CO2 plays another important role for the life in the earth. It is the member of the earth’s carbon cycle. Carbon cycle refers to the circulation of carbon among the atmosphere, oceans, soil, plants, and animals. Human activities have been adding greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Among all the greenhouse gases being added in the atmosphere by humans, CO2 accounts about 80%. Its high concentration has been built up in the atmosphere because of its very high emission by human activities. The…

    Plastic Degrading Bacterium Identified

A team of Japanese researchers led by Shosuke Yoshida (Department of Applied Biology, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto) has identified a bacterium species Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6 that can break down the plastic called polyethylene terephthalate or PET. PET is considered highly biodegradation resistant and till now only two fungi could be identified that can degrade it. This is the first report in which a bacteria able to breakdown PET could be identified. The bacteria were screened by using 250 contaminated samples obtained from PET bottle recycling site. The microorganisms that could utilize PET as carbon source for growth were selected. In the first stage of research a microbial consortium capable…

What are the Causes of Global Warming?

Causes Of Global Warming : The accumulation of  heat trapping gases in the atmosphere is the reason of rising global temperature known as ‘global warming‘. These heat trapping gases are known as greenhouse gases.         Greenhouse Gases Greenhouse gases include carbon di oxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons etc. In the atmosphere these gases act as a blanket, trap heat radiations reflected by the earth which in their absence would go back to atmosphere and eventually increase the global temperature. Greenhouse Effect Sun emits electromagnetic radiations. When the radiation strikes the earth surface a part of it is absorbed while rest is emitted back as infrared rays…

What are the Causes of Climate Change : List of Natural and Human Factors Responsible

Life on Earth is possible because of the fine energy balance between the energy Earth receives and the energy that goes back into the atmosphere.  The energy balance maintains average weather conditions for a very long period of time on earth. The sole source of all the energy present in the Earth is the Sun. The earth receives energy in the form of sunlight. The surface of the earth absorbs more than 50% of the sunlight. The rest 50% sunlight gets reflected by the earth surface in the form of heat. The reflected heat energy while on its way back reaches the lower atmosphere.  Greenhouse gases are present in the lower atmosphere. They…

Global Warming Trends Prove that it is Real

What is Global Warming ? The average temperature on our Earth is rising continuously. This is known as Global Warming. The reason behind the rise in the global temperature is the released greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. Whenever and wherever the word ‘Earth’s temperature’ is used it means that the temperature of the surface of the earth. The Earth’s surface is made up of land surface and the surface of the ocean. Global warming is leading to the rise in both land surface and the surface of the ocean. Rise in average temperature is leading to the changes in the climatic system of the Earth.  Is climate really changing? What are…
